Energy is present in everybody's daily life, in our social and leisure activities and in the economic activities on which our society is based. All energy used in the transport industry, trade, our houses, comes essentially from fossil fuel, leading, in the case of Portugal, to a 90% national energetic dependence.

We start to see that fossil fuel reserves are limited. Sooner or later the world is going to see itself deprived of oil, gas and coal. This scenario makes the growing resort to renewable energies look inevitable.

The environmenta1 impacts of renewable sources are, generally, extremely reduced compared to the impacts of conventional sources, and it is thus common to hear renewable energies being referred to as being clean and non-pollutant.
